After the 1755 earthquake the Marquês de Pombal had temporary lodgings
built for the royal family on safer ground on what was then the
outskirts of Lisbon in the Ajuda neighbourhood. Ten years later the
land around it was turned into the first botanical garden in Portugal
and the 15th in Europe. This garden overlooking the Tagus River and the
25th of April Bridge has a very geometric style in keeping with the
time when it was designed. One of its most visited features is the
scent garden created specifically for the enjoyment of the blind.
