Main shopping areas:
There are some areas in Lisbon specially devoted to shopping. Clothing, jewellery, shoes, purses, perfumes, ceremony customs, trinkets and almost everything you might need are just some of the things that you may find in the following areas:
Downtown – the area frequently called “Baixa” (downtown) comprises the Rossio, the Augusta street and its transversal streets, Chiado and the Liberdade (Freedom) Avenue.
This is one of the oldest commercial areas in Lisbon. The streets are named after the businesses or jobs that used to be practised there. Prata (Silver) Street, is where silver used to be sold; Ouro (Gold) Street and Ferreiros (Blacksmiths) Street are other of these examples. The main shopping street is Rua Augusta, where you will find all the main high-street brands such as Zara, Benetton, Lanidor, Levi’s, H&M, etc.
To shop for luxury brands,
Avenida da Liberdade is the main Avenue, where Louis Vuitton, Armani, Burberry’s and many others have opened large luxurious stores.
The
Chiado area has a good mixture of both high-street brands, luxury shops and small boutique stores. For the high-street brands walk Along the Rua Garrett, Rua do Carmo and Rua Nova do Almada, as well as in the famous small Shopping Centre, Armazéns do Chiado. Recently a large Marc Jacobs shop opened in the Largo São Carlos, in front of the famous Theatre. Search around the small streets in Chiado and close to the Carmo Convent where you will find small boutique and second-hand shops.
The Bairro Alto area may also prove to be an interesting shopping experience, with many brands on offer hidden behind several corners, as is the case of the famous Portuguese designer, Fátima Lopes,on the Rua da Atalaia or the recent Porconceito store on the Travessa da Espera, nº17.
All these areas are filled with
cafés and
restaurants, ideal resting places that will add an extra flavour to your visit to Lisbon.
Shopping Centres:
Shopping centres are almost everywhere in the city. Bigger or smaller, they’ll do their best to suit your needs. We decided to list the bigger surfaces: Colombo, Vasco da Gama, Amoreiras and El Corte Inglés.
These areas include several shops of different branches of business, including restaurants and leisure facilities like movie theatres.
