Museum of the National Ajuda Palace (Palácio Nacional da Ajuda)

This wonderful museum occupies the east and south wings of the palace that was built on the grounds of the “Royal Shack”. The latter was a temporary home for royalty built after the 1755 earthquake on the safer grounds of the Ajuda neighbourhood. Later the palace was built and lots of treasures from the Paço Real were used to decorate it, so there are in the palace today works of art and decorative pieces that span five centuries of history. Here you will see luxurious rooms lined with silk, decorated with porcelain and glass and lit by crystal chandeliers. Some of them, like the very long banquet hall with frescos on the ceiling and silk lined chairs are still used today for very special state receptions.
