Coppélia

This sentimental comical ballet premiered in 1870 in the French Opera, the Théàtre Impérial de l’Opéra. The story tells of a slightly diabolical inventor, Doctor Coppélius, who designed a doll which mannerisms, shape and size were very close to a live human. Franz, the young village stud becomes infatuated with it. He places aside his true heart’s desire, Swanhilde, who becomes increasingly jealous and eventually pretends to be the doll, Coppélia, coming to life.
