Man Ray, Jorge Martins and Julião Sarmento: Portraits of Women

restratos_mulheres.jpg
This exhibition shows a collection of portraits of women by three artists: Man Ray, Jorge Martins and Julião Sarmento.
From Man Ray you will get to see pictures the artist took of his wife, Juliet Browner taken between 1941 and 1955. The selection of photographs come from Man Ray’s book called, “The Fifty Faces of Juliet”, all taken in Los Angeles , where Man Ray applied several techniques and styles to his work.
Jorge Martins exhibits 20 intimate portraits of the feminine model, photographed between 1964 and 12973, in Paris, where some were taken at the Parisian atelier belonging to Vieira da Silva. The pictures were coloured with crayons as a highlight of the lights and shade of each picture, later used for the artist’s paintings.
Julião Sarmento presents 62 photographs of 31 women taken over 42 years starting in the 1960’s. The pieces shown include intimate records of women with spontaneous and playful touches and pictures that suggest more aesthetic intentions, closer to what is widely recognised as Sarmento’s style.
