Art Déco, 1925
Art Deco came about after the International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Modern Arts in 1925 in France. The main objective of this exhibition was to present decorative
pieces that would evade from the traditional forms. A study of these pieces - including furniture, decorative objects, painting and sculpture - shows that these works are a mixture of a particular modernism and an exuberant and dominant neoclassicism.
The exhibition at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian include many interesting pieces, namely: Ruhlmann, Groult, jewelery from Christofle, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Chaumet, ceramics by Jourdain and Braquemond, porcelain by Rapin, paintings by Léger and Laurencin, sculptures by Janniot and Joseph Bernard, and many, many more.
